Charles to miss rich golf
PA Auckland Bob Charles is to pass up New Zealand’s richest golf tournament, the $75,000 New Zealand Airlines-Shell Open iat Titirangi on October 1923. In a letter to the tournament organisers, the veteran left-hander said he now has two rules — not to play in tournaments for longer than six weeks in a row, and not to be away from his family for longer than a month. Consequently, he said, he reluctantly had decided to pass up the Titirangi event. However, he wiil be playing in the Otago Charity Classic and the N.Z. Open in December.
Although all entries have not yet been received, it appears that there will no longer be any need for prequalifying. The organisers had set a maximum field of 144 but by yesterday 121 entries had been received. More entries are expected from the U.K., and Ireland, including Christy O’Connor and Eamon-n Darcy.
