New offer on house rentals
PA Wellington Electricity Department workers will consider another offer from the Minister of State Services (Mr Gordon) on proposed increases in departmental house rentals before deciding further action. Fourteen days notice of the men’s intention to take direct action will expire on October 13. Mr Go'rdon’s offer is a discount on the proposed increases. If accepted, it would mean that from October 13, urban electricity workers would pay a weekly rental of $10.99, and rural workers $6.20. The discarded increases amount to 74c and 20c respectively, 26c and 5c less than the proposed increases. The chairman of the Combined State Service Organisations (Mr J. F. Turner) had said after a meeting with the Minister on Thursday that a strike, which would lead to power blackouts, was a “distinct possibility.”
