Dickel will play for Merivale
Carl Dickel, a former Otago and Canterbury allrounder, has transferred to the suburban cricket club, Merivale-Papanui, as a player-coach. Dickel spent five seasons with East ChristchurchShirley in the Canterbury Cricket Association senior competition, scoring 1527 runs (at an average of 20.3) and claiming 139 wickets (average 13.9).
His loss will be sorely felt by his former club, which appears likely to have to rely largely on inexperienced players in its bid to gain a more prominent place in the championshiptable.
Rugby.—Clive Rowlands has been named manager of the Welsh Rugby Union party to tour Australia next year. Rowlands, a Welsh selector and former international half-back, will lead the party through a five-week, ninematch tour. His assistant will be John Dawes.
Cricket. — Frank Hayes has been named as the new captain of Lancashire to suceed David Lloyd, who resigned after the club finished second bottom of the English county cricket championship last season. Hayes, 30, an economics graduate and stylish batsman, has played in nine tests for England. Lloyd will continue as a player.
