Lakes up, but power worries still
Storage in the South Island hydro lakes has risen steadily in the last week, but the over all gains are minimal, says the district manager for the Electricity Department (Mr G. B. Collie). The main gains had been in Lakes Te Anau and Manapouri, but the level of Lake Pukaki had dropped, and Lakes Tekapo, Hawea, and Coleridge were not contributing to power generation. Water was being taken from Lake Pukaki to raise the level of Lake Benmore, he said, and this would increase the efficiency of the Benmore power station.
Lake levels in the South Island rose from 32 per cent of nominal full to 35 per cent in the week, while those in the North Island fell from 71 to 68 per cent. Hydro stations contributed slightly more than 66 per cent of the energy supplied for the week, about the same as the previous week.
Power savings were 8.7 per cent better than the national guidelines.
