Sookera wins Stakes
NZPA London The American-bred Sookera, one of three Irish-trained challengers, raced to victory in the Cheveley Park Stakes for two-j-eariold fillies at Newmarket. Sookera, ridden by the Irishbased Englishman, Wally gwinbum, took the lead a furlong out in the six-furlong race ana captured the £37,331 winner’s purse comfortably by threequarters of a length. Mr Robert gangster's filly, by Roberto out of the young Emperor mare, I Rule, was favourite at 3 to 1 in the field of 10.
Petty Purse, an Outsider, ridden by Willie Carson, finished second, with Fair Salina a head away third, but after a stewards’ enquiry, Petty Purse was disqualified. Fair Salina was placed second and Smarten up third.
