Jayex looks Derby chance
J a vex entered calculations for the New Zealand Derby Stakes next month when he made his rivals look secondrate in the Elgin Handicap.: at the Ashburton meeting on: Saturday. Jayex led for the last: 2000 m and won easily by more than two lengths from; Port View and Johnny Re-' galo. His stablemate, Armbro Dhu, was pushed back early' and made ground for seventh. Raced by Mr Jack Ferguson, of Greenpark. Jayex is: trained at Weedons by Jacki Smolensk!. He is a colt by l
Nevel Romeo from Eblouir, which foaled a filly by Out to Win within a few seconds; of Jayex passing the win-1 ning post. I “I knew the mare was due; 'to foal and wasn’t going to Addington, although I was keen to see Jayex race,” I said Mr Ferguson. “Mr Noel Joseph said he would look after the mare while I went ■ to Addington for the one race. He told me later that 1 the foal arrived just after Jayex had passed the post.” • I E'bouir will return to Out jto Win. ' Rock On, a son of
Dancer’s Boy, was equally as impressive as Jayex when he won the Hinds Handicap very easily from Carnival King. Raced by his trainer, Cyril White, Rock On led from end to end and returned the smart time of 3min 26.8 s for the 2600 m. PULLED UP Spartan Prince was favourite, paying $2.70 for a win, in the Mount Somers Handicap, but that was his share of it. He swung his head round just after beginning cleanly and bounded,
breaking his crupper. His overcheck also came adrift. Doody Townley was lucky to keep control of Spartan Prince, which was pulled up hfter 200 m. Life line, a winner at Methven a week earlier, confirmed that run with a fine win over Power Cut and Special Princess, with Pointer Hanover making ground for a close fourth. Drifted In came from far back starting the last 800 m to beat Jaunty Hanover by half a length in the Durbar Handicap. Drifted In, like Lifeline, was a winner at Methven seven days earlier. Jacks Tram put interest into the last few metres of the race by flashing up for third, ahead of Lauraine Hanover and the surprise favourite, Smart Doll. Sunseeker was seen in favourable light when he led throughout the Seafield Handicap. He did not look like being tested and won by more than three lengths from American Chief, which did well from 10m. Bluegum Surprise was a useful third, ahead of Frisco Frost.
