Cut in D.P.B.
PA Auckland All applications granted on or after next Monday for the domestic purposes benefit would be paid at the reduced rate, the Minister of Social Welfare (Mr Walker) announced last evening.
Speaking at the biennial meeting of the Dominion Federation of Townswomen’s Guilds, Mr Walker said that the amount to be paid for the first six months, an emergency maintenance allowance, would be $49.84 for a beneficiary and one child.
For a second child $3 would be paid, and $1.25 for any after that. Mr Walker said an extra benefit of up to $l6 a week would still be paid to those with limited income and assets and a higher rate of extra benefit would be paid where there was likely to be hardship. If after six months there had been no reconciliation, the normal rate of benefit, now $65.84, would be paid. The higher rate would also apply to an unmarried mother who had decided to keep her child.
