Country clubs dominate Cowlishaw golf contest

Country clubs, particularly Rakaia, dominated the fiftieth annual Cowlishaw Cup women’s golf foursome competition at. Shirley yesterday. Mesdames M. Davison, M. Knight, G. Copland, and J. Gardner returned net scores of 71 and 84 for a total of 155, four strokes better than the rounds of 83 and 76 of the two Kaiapoi pairs of Mesdames C. Mclntosh, M. Monk, N. McGregor, and M. Brown.

The country superiority continued with Culverden (Mesdames J. Brice, M. Milne, G. Beaven, and E. Mason) claiming third position with 81, 79—160, ahead of Charteris Bay (Mrs T. Tasker, Miss G. Meyer, and Mesdames N. Sudlow and J. Laver) with 78, 85—163. McLean’s Island was the best of the Christchurchbased clubs, Mesdames V. Wells, T. Watson, D. Tinker, and E. McDougal aggregated 164 (77, 87) marginally better

than the 76, 89—165 of the Avondale quartet of Mesdames D. Ritchie, S. Bradley, E. South, and S. McDowell. Tied in seventh place were the Greendale and Rangiora teams.

The net 71 of Mesdames Davison and Knight also earned them a comfortable victory in the Pumphrey Cup section for the best performance by a pair. Equal second, with 76, were Mesdames Ritchie and Bradley and Mesdames McGregor and Brown. Mesdames Wells and Watson returned a 77 and on 78 were Mesdames M. Ross and B. Brett (Waimairi Beach), Mesdames E. Kent and A. Harrison (Rangiora), and Mrs Tasker and Miss Meyer. The Manuhiri Cup, awarded to the leading pair from the host club, was won by Mesdames B. Hargreaves and I. Davidson (74) from Mesdames J. K. Austad and A. Maturin (75) and Mesdames D. Reece and J. B. Hay (77).:

Representatives of 35 clubs competed, an indication of the expansion of the tournament since it was inaugurated — and won by Hagley, by one stroke from Hawarden — with 10 entries a halfcentury ago. In the Canterbury District Ladies’ Golf Association’s pennant competition, Christchurch and Templeton took the honours.

This year, a new format was followed, with the top four teams in each of the three zones participating in a fifth and final round. The silver division, played at Coringa, andNthe bronze division, played at Weedons, both produced close contests among the rival clubs. Results:

Silver division: Christchurch 21 points, 1; Harewood and Russley, 19 points, equal 2. Bronze division: Templeton, 21, 1; Kaiapoi, 20, 2; Greendale, 18J, 3.
