Expedition off
NZPA-Reuter Calcutta Sir Edmund Hillary’s river expedition left Calcutta yesterday in wet and steamy monsoon weather at the start of a 3000 km journey up the Ganges. The expedition aims to sail three jet boats from the mouth of the Ganges, in the bay of Bengal, to its source in the northern Indian Himalayas. The voyage has been called the “ocean to the sky expedition.” The three boats and 19 men were given a warm send-off as they left for the
first stop, Nabadwip, an ancient seat of learning. Str Edmund expects the toughest part of the river trip to be in the final 350kilometre “white water” stretch. He said this would involve a battle between river and boats, with the threat of destruction by rapids and boulders. When the jet boats get as far as they can go — Joshimath, in Himalayan foothills — the expedition will travel by road to Badrinath then climb the 5960metre peak of Narain Prabat.
