Two new boarders’ houses, each accommodating 60 boys, will be built at St Andrew’s College. The sketch plan shows the two new houses linked on the left to the taller Rutherford House, a boarders’ house built about four years ago. Architects for the work are Griffiths, Moffat, and Partners. Included in the two new houses will be three common-rooms, plus accommodation for a house master, two matrons, and four house tutors.
Finance for the building, which will cost about $600,000, has come mainly from a bequest from the estate of Mr and Mrs W. S. Mac Gibbon. The rector of the college (Mr I. T. Galloway) said that although building permits had to be confirmed,
it was hoped to start work soon. The buildings should be ready in about 12 months.
The two new buildings will replace accommodation in the old wooden Strowan House, which now houses 80 boys. Forty boys from the ground floor of Rutherford House will also move to the new houses.
Mr Galloway said that, as sleeping accommodation, Strowan House was considered a potential fire risk.
The kitchen and dining room in Strowan House will still be used, but it is hoped to replace these eventually. The extra space in Strowan will be converted to study facilities and common-rooms, and in Rutherford to a commonroom.
