Monzon to hang up gloves
NZPA Buenos Aires Carlos Monzon (Argentina) has formally announced his retirement from boxing thus relinquishing his world middle-weight boxing title and formally ending one of the most successful careers in the history of his division, United Press International reported. “I always said I would return home with the title,” i Monzon said at a lavish ceremony at the Buenos Aires Sheraton Hotel. “It stays with mv family and all Argentina.”
Monzon then signed telegrams addressed to the World Boxing Association and the World Boxing Council formally renouncing the championship he held for the last seven years. Monzon had made the promise to retire before meeting Columbia’s Rodrigo Valdes in Monte Carlo last month in his final title defence.
