Activity brightened up on Australian stock exchanges yesterday and several stocks reached " new highs for the year.
Talk of another take-over bid for the coal and oil company, A.A.R., saw the shares rise 13c to 193 c after reaching 197 c at one stage. A.A.R. directors have told shareholders that C.S.R.’s bid of 175 c is too low. Other coal issues improved with Utah up 3c to 415 c, Coal and Allied 5c to
360 c, but Bellambi fell 10c to 950 c and White Industries 3c to 147 c.
Among the oils Santos rose 27c to 260 c as interest continues in the Pedirka Basin oil find in South Australia. Vamgas which has a small interest was steady at 40c.
