Late yesterday the issue still 'had not been decided, although iit is understood that anything j up to six names have been mentinned as possible contenders lover the last few weeks. | Even now it is not 100 per : cent certain whether the port_B mayor for 18 years, Mr J. Bi Collett, will stand down, and there is a growing body of feeling that he may once again let this name go forward—at the < eleventh hour. ■ Lvttelton’s Deputy Mayor (Mr | if H. Du ft’) -seemed a logical first ! choice as Mr Collett’s successor. ; but he has let U be known that Ibe has little interest in taking on the additional responsibilities • of mayor. ' !
