No rush against Labour
i Nominations will close for Lyt- ' telton’s local body elections in I less than 30 hours, and independent candidates are still at sixes , and sevens over choosing a I mayoral candidate to stand I against Labour’s Mr M. E. Foster ! Late yesterday the issue still 'had not been decided, although iit is understood that anything j up to six names have been mentinned as possible contenders lover the last few weeks. | Even now it is not 100 per : cent certain whether the port_B mayor for 18 years, Mr J. Bi Collett, will stand down, and there is a growing body of feeling that he may once again let this name go forward—at the < eleventh hour. ■ Lvttelton’s Deputy Mayor (Mr | if H. Du ft’) -seemed a logical first ! choice as Mr Collett’s successor. ; but he has let U be known that Ibe has little interest in taking on the additional responsibilities • of mayor. ' ! It has been suggested b’ tnose I close to the seat of power that i j the name of a mayoral candidate I may not be forthcoming until, 1130 am. on Friday. I Nominations will close at j noon on Friday. The problem of finding independent council candidates to island against a solid Labour I ticket seems to have been i resolved, although no names have been forthcoming. Two sitting independents. Cr F F. Crawford and Cr K. T. Keenan, will definitely not be .standing this year but the remaining four, Crs R. 11. Duff, M V Gass, S. C. Dailey and H. Ic Gilmore, seem to be still lb I the running. arrivals I Coastal Trader (6.56 a tn.). 2500, leapt. J. Sutherland.
