Fisheries zone ‘by March’

NZPA staff correspondent Port Moresby The South Pacific Forum has decided that its members, including New Zealand, should extend their fisheries zone as early as practicable, and if possible by March 31 next year. It has also agreed to establish a South Pacific fisheries regional agency, which will be eventually based at Honiara, Solomon Islands. An Australian offer to

base the agency initially at the Institute of Oceanographic Research in Cronulla, New South Wales, was accepted. The moves were made in an effort to harmonise fisheries policies and adopt a co-ordinated regional approach and negotiations with distant fishing nations, such as Japan. The exploitation of the fisheries is expected to eventually bring substantial financial benefits to the nations of the region.
