Police hunt sniper
NZPA-Reuter Belfast Undercover policemen agents are hot on the trail i of an Irish Republican Army! sniper they believe has killed several British soldiers in Northern Ireland this year, according to police sources. The marksman is believed to be an experienced I.R.A.i guerrilla who specialises in "snipes,” guerrilla slang for: sniper ambushes on military! patrols. The police suspect he has killed at least four soldiers, and badly- wounded several others this year. His trademark is accuracy. l
In every ambush he fired only one shot — and never missed. I His latest victim was (Lance Corporal Jack Marshall, a 25-year-old Gordon Highlander killed in Belfast’s troublesome Ardoyne area on Sunday. Ardoyne is a tough Roman Catholic district and a I stronghold of the I.R.A.’s Provisional wing. j Marshall, one of a four'man foot patrol, was shot fiotn a house. He was the twenty-first British soldier . killer this year in Northern Ireland, where the mainly Roman Catholic I.R.A. is 'fighting to end British rule.
