'Too many planning regions'

PA Gisborne The Canterbury Regional Planning Authority has urged the Local Government Commission to reconsider its decision to create about 19 regional planning councils throughout New Zealand. At a hearing in Gisborne yesterday of submissions on the proposed East Cape United Council, the Canterbury authority’s director of planning (Mr C. B. Millar) advocated the formation of only about eight regions. The Canterbury authority recommended that the commission either await a national policy, await the guidance of the New Zealand Planning Council, or immediately undertake a survey. Mr Millar asked the commission to grant the authority a hearing soon to discuss the commission’s proposals in full before final consideration was given to any proposed region.
