House hold-up

The Main South Road near Ealing was blocked for more than 20 minutes yesterday after a housemoving job went awry. Traffic built up for about half a mile and a crowd of motorists gathered to watch as workmen struggled to remove the heavy transporter and the house from the highway. The house, which had been used by Railways workers stationed at Ealing—about eight miles

south of Hinds—had been loaded on to the truck without incident. The transporter, owned by the Timaru-based firm of A. V. Martyn and Company, Ltd, dragged the house halfway across the road, but came to a stop as the rear wheels sank into the soft ground of the section. It was finally moved with the aid of a passing logging truck, allowing the banked-up traffic to stream through.
