President from industry
NZPA Melbourne Dr Keith Sutherland, director of research for the Colonial Sugar Refinery, Ltd, has accepted appoint* ment as president of the Australian and New Zealand association for the Advancement of Science. The current president of A.N.Z.A.A.S. Dr Lloyd Evans, said in a statement that Dr Sutherland would preside over the next congress, in Auckland in January, 1979. Dr Sutherland is the first president of A.N.Z.A.A.S. to be appointed from industry since Dr R. G. Ward, of the Broken Hill Proprietary Company, Ltd, presided in 1971. Dr Sutherland said the theme in New Zealand would be concerned with directions for the future. “It is timely that A.N.Z.A.A.S. has selected a person from industry as its new president. “I shall emphasise the thought that technology, as well as science, can be better applied in our longterm future,” he said. “Industry and community interests need to be better served by science and technology. Indeed, industry and community interests have a common goal — the enrichment of life ‘A.N.Z.A.AS. is well suited as a forum for discussion on ways in which this goal can be achieved?’
