Basketball The remarkable success of the Malrehau High School team in the New Zealand secondary schools’ girls’ basketball championship Is reflected in the composition of the national schoolgirls’ team to tour the North Island from September 4 to 10. Mairehau, which recently won the national title for the sixth time, has seven representatives in the team of 11, announced yesterday by the selector-coach, Mr Kerry Williams, of Christchurch. The seven are Allonea Taie, Rayne Cassidy, Jeanette Howard, Vivienne Howard, Bronwyn Palmer, Ronyn North, and Donna Broughton. They will also be taking leading roles in the Canterbury under-20 team which begins its quest for the national junior title at Rotorua today.
Other members of the secondary schoolgirls’ side, chosen after two days of trials, are Veronica Thompson (Wellington East Girls" College), Tania Rimene (Makora College). Linda Leonard (Tauranga G.H.S.), and Bronwyn Cate fOtumoetal College). The New Zealand junior men’s
basketball championships continued In Nelson yesterday and Hamilton and Panmure remained the only unbeaten teams. The first century of the tournament went to Canterbury, which crushed Napier, 104-36. There were also two surprises when the highly-fancied North Shore was edged out by Panmure, 81-86, and Hamilton beat Otago by a remarkable margin of 30 points. Results; Panmure 86, North Shore 81; Canterbury 104, Napier 36; North Shore 87, Nelson 65; Palmerston North 59, Wellington 51; Hamilton 92, Otago 62; Hutt Valley 64, Napier 61. Hockey Canterbury, Ashburton and Auckland were the only unbeaten teams after the second day’s play in the Hatch Cup primary schoolboys’ hockey tournament in Christchurch. Canterbury, after two easy wins on the first day, struggled to beat Manawatu, 1-0, yesterday and maintain its winning record and the chance of a place in the semi-finals tomorrow. In section B Ashburton and
Nelson each have three wins but Ashburton has played only three games, and beat Nelson, 1-0, yesterday morning. Auckland beat its toughest opponent in section C, South Canterbury, 3-0, yesterday, and seems sure of making the semifinals. Yesterday afternoon it played the visiting Queensland schoolboys’ team and lost, 2-3. Afternoon matches yesterday were shifted from the headquarters at Porrltt Park to Ham and the morning matches in the tournament today will also be played at Ham, to give the Porritt Park grounds a chance to dry out after heavy rain on Monday.
