“The greatest challenge I that New’ Zealand and the 'rest of the Western World faces is to survive, with a I degree of human dignity, the collapse of industrialised capitalist society. "The early symptoms of this breakdown are already with us. Conventional leaders call for more growth to solve problems that are caused essentially by growth itself. The problem is not inadequate output but the composition and distribution of that output. Growth will not solve what is basically an allocation problem. “The limits to growth are clearly visible. Cheap sources of energy and raw materials are gone forever. Technology of the right kind can help us adjust to earthly limits, it cannot extend those limits, i “Unless we plan now for an ultimate no growth economy, the future indeed looks bleak. To continue our present economic and political trends is very likely to take us to some form of Fascism whereby the State combines forces with the owners and operators of big business to protect the interess of the wealthy and he privileged.
“To change course and build a just, democratic and sustainable society will require a restructuring of our institutions and a reorientation of our personal and collective goals. "New Zealanders have a clear choice. Making the right choice will require considerable maturity, wisdom, and courage. 1 trust these qualities are not lacking.”
