Umpire retires

A persistent ankle injury has peruaded one of New Zealand’s most experienced test cricket umpires. Mr Dennis Copps, to retire.

Mr Copps stood in 15 tests between 1964 and last summer, having made his first-rdass debut in the Plunket Shield fixture between Wellington and Central

Districts during the 1960 61 season.

His work as an umpire and for umpiring was not confined to on-field activities: Mr Copps was the secretary of the national umpires’ association for 10 years from 1964 and is still a member of that body’s management committee.
