Death toll in riots up to 112
NZPA-Reuter Colombo Communal clashes in Sri Lanka have left 112 people dead and more than 4000 under arrest, the State-run “Ceylon Daily News” has reported. It quoted official sources as saying that a seven-hour curfew, enforced for the ninth night on Sunday night, was likely to be shortened. The sources said the northern town of Jaffna, where the violence directed mainly against Sri Lanka’s 2.5 million Tamil minority began two weeks ago, was calm. So was the rest of the island except for a few sporadic incidents.
The “Daily News” said that police and security forces had recovered looted goods worth five million rupees (about $700,000). The newspaper “Weekend” said that the dead included looters shot by security forces, and those under arrest were being held
