Retired nurse dead
Miss Kathleen Bland, a woman who devoted much of her life to nursing, died recently in Christchurch. She was 66.
Miss Bland was born at Ashburton Gorge, ana educated at Ashburton and St Margaret’s College, Christchurch. She did her general nursing taining at Christchurch Hospital. From 1944 to 1946, Miss Bland served as a sister in the New Zealand Army Nursing Service, and spent some time in Japan with J-Force.
She returned to New Zealand and served as a tutor sister at the Waiouru camp hospital.
Miss Bland later joined Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps in England. She travelled with the corps, and while working at the British military hospital in Malaya, was made an associate of the Royal Red Cross.
On her return to New Zealand, Miss Bland spent several years as matron of the military hospital at Burnham.
In 1964 she became matron-in-charge of the Nurse Maude Medical Hospital and Averill House. She retired in 1974. Miss Bland was a member of the St John Ambulance Brigade, of Altrusa, and the Pan Pacific and South East Asia Women’s Association. She is survived by a sister, Betty, and a brother, George.
