No help for buses
PA Auckland The Government had no plan at present to assist private bus companies with their running costs, said the Minister of Transport (Mr McLachlan). He told delegates at the annual meeting of the Bus and Coach Association in Auckland that because the economy was so buoyant he could promise nothing. "We cannot hand out money to everyone, and must look to areas of greatest need,” he said.
He advised the private firms to approach the stillfunctioning Urban Public Passenger Transport Council for assistance. This year’s $500,000 allocation to the council was an “effective increase” on last year’s SI.2M because now the council did not have to cater for the four, main centres. I f'
