Auckland set to win
PA Auckland Social activities—notably the farewell bail—took precedence over tabulation of results at the New Zealand universities winter tournament yesterday but with a clear lead of 22| points from Otago, Auckland was in an unassailable position to take the tournament shield for 1977. In third place, with 25 points, is Canterbury, the winner of the winter tournament shield last year Trailing by only one point from Otago, Canterbury could still wrest the runner-up spot. Auckland's 48i points were gained from wins in women’s soccer, badminton, fencing harriers, netball, table tennis, rugby league, and men's hockey. [ One of the sections which proIduced an extremely close competition was the women’s hockey. Canterbury was pushed hard by Otago throughout and later by Waikato. The first three platings in the final points table were separated by only one point. Canterbury emerged with nine, Otago had eight and Waikato seven Auckland had a clear lead in the men’s hockey with nine points but Otago, Massey and Victoria each had six points while Lincoln, Canterbury, and Waikato each gained five points. In men's basketball yesterday Auckland B (Teachers) beat Canterbury, 36-20. and Otago beat Lincoln, 95-45.
