Teachers want one pay scale

From MARGARET BUTLER in Wellington The Post-Primary Teachers’ Association yesterday recommended “that the secondary teachers’ salary scale be modified to enable all trained secondary teachers to reach the maximum basic salary, after the completion of current salary negotiations.”

The association is in effect asking that all teachers who have appropriate qualifications be translated to a common scale, similar to the present Group Three scale.

It also means that all those who have such qualifications would be able to reach the top of that scale.

At present, three separate scales apply, ranging from that for persons with minimum qualifications to that for those with honours degrees. Support was expressed by the conference for its present salary claim and for the executive in its negotiations.

The conference also agreed to instruct the executive within the next year, and only after full consultation with association members, to formulate a new salary policy to meet needs of the profession and secondary education in the 1980 s.

Mr P. B. Andrews, Of Kaitaia College, will succeed Mrs I. M. Gaskin as president of the association. Mr Andrews, who has been a member of the executive since 1972, is at present junior vice-president. He will take up his new post in Wellington in February. After attending Otago Boys' High School and Otago University, Mr Andrews spent 10 years in the

Royal New Zealand Air Force, part of the time as an education officer. After several years teaching in the North Island Mr Andrews was appointed principal of Kaitaia College in 1970. He has been a delegate to P.P.T.A. conferences for many years. Jail term imposed An Otahuhu Magistrate, Mr M. C. Astley, S.M., said he was bound to impose a jail term on a woman who had defrauded the Social Welfare Department of $13,427. He sentenced Gloria An Ward, aged 35, a housewife to six months jail on eight charges of obtaining welfare benefits y fraud. — (P.A.).
