Rugby invitations

Sir, — It is just as well Mr Muldoon, our Prime Minister, did not pass legislation proposed by Mr Wilkinson about people who made statements damaging to New Zealand outside the country. Mr Don is reported as having made a statement in South Africa on the Gleneagles Agreement and has been reported as saying the whole of New Zealand is behind New Zealand’s participation in the World XV rugby team in Pretoria. As Mr Don does not speak for the whole of New Zealand this statement is ill-chosen and certainly untrue. The feelings of all New Zealanders would only be known by a referendum on apartheid and sport. Mr Don appears to have spoken for New Zealand opinions, not as an individual, but as an ambassador of what he thinks is the only sport in the world. — Yours, etc., GRAEME STANLEY. August 24, 1977.
