Rolleston Avenue buildings
Sir, — At last Saturday’s official opening of Rolleston House Youth Hostel the Mayor, (Mr Hay), referred to the City Council’s original plan to use the site for carparking, maintaining that ultimately it would still be needed for this. The treasurer 'of the Youth Hostels’ Association expressed the hope that the $50,000 spent on renovations would be justified by a very long-term lease of the building. To my surprise, Mr Hay even raised the possibility of a parking building, a suggestion first made some time ago. The Environmental Vanguard Organisation, which assisted the Y.H.A. to obtain the use of Rolleston House, opposes any idea of a parking building on the site, or on the adjacent council car-park. Such a building would be environmentally undesirable in an area graced by the old University buildings, the Museum and the gardens. Future buildings in Rolleston Avenue should be of appropriate uses and architectural quality. — Yours, etc. (DR) HELEN HERVEY,
Chairman, Environmental Vanguard Organisation. August 22, 1977.
