Smoking in buses
Sir, — In reply to J. E. Cornhill I must point out that it is not just the smell of smoke that offends, it is also the health problems for those who have to breath the filthy air. Information on health hazards in connection with smoking is freely available for all who want to live a healthier and cleaner life. Information has been given to me that it is an offence for drivers to smoke while driving any passenger service vehicle in any part of N.Z. If this is so many people will be grateful if this section of the
Transport Act is publicised by the Transport Department. — Yours, etc., L. W. HOBBY. [Mr A. Goldsmith, on behalf of the regional director. Road Transport Division, Ministry of Transport, replies: “The driver of a motor omnibus who smokes in that vehicle while engaged in the conveyance of fare-paying passengers commits an offence — Regulation 20, Clause 9 of the Motor Drivers’ Regulations 1964. A motor omnibus is a vehicle designed solely or principally for the carriage of more than 14 persons, or designed solely or principally for the carriage of persons and for the time being, carrying more than 14 persons.”]
