Teacher status sought
PA Wellington. Kindergarten teachers sought the status of teachers as defined in the Education Act, Ms Carol Garden said in her president’s address to the Kindergarten Teachers’ Association annual meeting in Wellington. “Kindergarten teachers are not at present included in this definition and are thus effectively
discriminated against in many areas of professional concern,” she said. They were not eligible for classes for teachers’ courses run by teachers’ colleges, or for specialist courses. Kindergarten teachers needed specialist courses so that they could provide adequately for children with special needs, said Ms Garden.
