Courageous wins short race

NZPA-Reuter Newport, Rhode Island The American 12 metre yacht Courageous yesterday defeated Independence by 53 seconds in an America’s Cup final selection series race shortened by a severe squall which swept Rhode Island Sound. The New York Yacht Club racing committee called the race off after three legs of a scheduled six-leg race. The Coast Guard had issued a storm and small craft warning due to a squall which swept in from the west, bringing with it a heavy thunderstorm and lightning.

There were no immediate reports of problems aboard the yachts, whose 85-foot masts were regarded as possible lightning rods. Courageous trailed Independence by four seconds at the start, but jumped to a 53-second lead at the end of the third leg, when the race was called off.
