Schubert and sun: 'Wednesday at one’

FOSTER BROWNE A warm sunny day was more than ordinarily, □feasant because of its rar- . itv and because Schubert’s Trio, Op. 99. was played by [Ruth Pearl, Mark Jackson, and Dobbs Franks, in the [afternoon at the Arts Centre [recital. This is a well-known work j which is gloriously aglow from start to finish and. like a fine day, it never palls. Mark Jackson is a cellist whose control over rich and beautiful tone showed his right to ioin the others m such a work. His playing showed rapport with the work and with his co-artists to most rewarding degree. The strongly singing first movement glittered in bright sheen through being carried
joyfully forward by the artistry of the Throughout the work tht playing was of very high 'order indeed, with nevet a fine point blurred. The slow movement had enveloping melodies, tender iyet adventurous, with the ijov of contemplation of unaliaved happiness realised in them. The scherzo was full of teasing mischief, and the last movement came as a cap■snatching joyous wind, on the rampage for the unwary, with genial exuberance There is always appreciative reception given at thes? “Wednesdays at One" recitals. but yesterday's applause surpassed the usual. .Those hearing this playing would carry its glow with them for the whole afternoon.
