TV licences worry moteliers
PA Wellington The question of a motel owner’s having to obtain current television licences for every set in his complex is creating serious concern with the motel industry, according to the president of the Motel Association of New Zea land (Mr S. C. J. Allen).
Mr Allen was com menting on the recer prosecution of a Picto Motel owner who wa prosecuted for not havin a licence for every set h his motel. “Even if a citizen is ; current television licence holder, the law appears to require a second licence to be paid for, once he views television in a motel unit,” Mr Allen said. “This amounts to forcing the public to pay a second time for something they have already paid for.”
Mr Allen said that as this second cost amounted to several hundred thousand dollars each year, the motel association viewed the matter with extreme concern.
“As soon as the question of penalty has been disposed of, an appeal will be lodged by the motelier concerned,” Mr Allen said.
