$1M tug having her problems
All is not well with the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s latest purchase — the SIM tug Godley. ■ The Godley arrived at Lyttelton 10 days ago, six weeks later than expected, made a ceremonial circuit of the inner harbour, and disappeared into the graving dock, where she has remained. It is believed that she
struck problems with her sophisticated Schottell propulsion unit on her way up from Dunedin, and one engine had to be shut down. A specialist in Schottell units has flown out specially from the Netherlands to supervise repairs.
The board’s general manager (Mr J. A. McPhail) said the problem was a bearing which had gone wrong on the Godley’s delivery trip, The Dutch specialist would supervise the bearing’s replacement, and give the Schottell unit a general check. Just who will foot the bill for the repairs has yet to be determined.
According to Mr McPhail, it will depend on negotiations between the board, Simms Engineering of Dunedin (the tug’s builder), and the Schottell company. The Godley is expected out of dry dock before the end of the week.
