Engineers may ‘sit-in’ at hospitals
Maintenance engineers in Christchurch hospitals may extend their work restrictions to a “sit-in," in an attempt to force the Hospital Boards’ Association to renew their award agreement.
The engineers have Joined their Auckland and Wellington counterparts to ban all new work until the associations sets a firm date to renegotiate the agreement. The Auckland engineers went a step further and began a “sit-in,” refusing to do any work unless it was urgent or life was endangered. The secretary of the Canterbury branch of the Engineers’ Union (Mr R. J. Todd) said that the “sit-in” could spread to Christchurch. “The men are losing patience fast,” he said. It is believed that Auckland and Christchurch hospital board representatives have agreed to return to conciliation, but are waiting for other boards to agree I before fixing a date.
