Top 10 to play in Aust. open
NZPA Sydney Ten of the world’s top golfers — whose combined winnings have topped SUSIM this year — will play in the Australian open championship at the Australian Golf Club, Sydney, from November 17-20. They are Jack Nlcklaus, Hubert Green, Ben Crenshaw, Ray Floyd, Jerry Pate, Bruce Lietzke, Andy Bean, Don January, Rik Massengale and Miller Barber. “It is the strongest field in Australian golf history,” said Mr Greg Bartels, spokesman for the sponsors, W. D. and H. O. Wills and “The Bulletin ” Mr Bartels said it was not just the SIBO,OOO prize money
that had attracted them “The standard of organisation has influenced many of them to travel here, along with the prospect of competing over the Australian Golf Club course following its major re-design by. Jack Nicklaus. •‘We anticipate that Aus* tralia’s international and home-ground golfing atars will be competing also, which supports our belief — shared by Nicklaus — that the Australian Open ranks first in the world behind the four major championships.” Mr Bartels said the organisers expect other leading American and overseas golfers to compete in the open.
