Migrant labour
Sir, — You rightly point out in your leading article (August 9) that two issues are involved with the Tongans at Cheviot. Criticism was made last year of the conditions at the Nassella Tussock Board camps. This was after visits to the camps, and the facts w’ere not denied by the board. Now that things are somewhat better we still regret that the system is necessary’. The Pacific Island Governments need help from New Zealand by fairer trade, enlightened development aid, and controlled immigration of family groups, not just the working males. At present many factors are stacked in favour of New Zealand. Look, for instance at the figures for trade between Tonga and New Zealand. — Yours, etc., JOY McLEOD. August 9, 1977.
