Thousands more flee volcano

NZPA-Reuter Tokyo The Mount Usu volcano in northern Japan has erupted three more times, shooting pillars of fire and ash into the sky and forcing 5000 people to flee a resort town on the mountain’s slopes pelted by falling rocks.

No casualties were reported.

Columns of black smoke rose Bkm into the sky and a carpet of white ash spread more than 64km from the rumbling peak, covering the city of Sapporo and spreading across the Sea of Okhotsk. The resort about 120 km north of Tokyo at scenic Lake Toya, was deserted, witnesses said. About 5000 residents of the area were moved out yesterday by military trucks and chartered buses. Parents carried their children on their shoulders as they walked down the slopes through a foot-deep carpet of thick ash soaked by rain.

They sought shelter at schools, public halls, and gymnasiums in a nearby town outside the volcanic zone.
