579 detained without charge
biZPA-Reuter Johannesburg The South African security police are detaining 579 people without charge, according to the independent Institute for Race Relations. The institute has also named 18 persons, all blacks, who have died while being held under the security laws since March, last year.
“The frequency with Uhich security detainees die thould be a matter of concern for the entire community,”
it said in its latest report. Inquests into a number of the deaths had been inconclusive, and relatives and friends of the detainees and' many other blacks believed “that these deaths have resulted from the system of persistent interrogation in solitary confinement,” it said. The institute renewed an appeal for a judicial inquiry into conditions under which security detainees are held and interrogated.
