Symposium on privacy

Concern about the threats to privacy posed by the expanded use of computers has led to the organising of an international symposium on the question. The symposium, to be held in Austria next month, has been arranged by the Organisation tor Economic Co-operation and Development. It will be attended by some 250 representatives of government and industry on the O.E.C.D.'s 24 member countries. They will hear some 40 speakers on the increasing flow of private data sent between countries by computers. The O.E.C.D has already concluded that governments must ensure protection for data, that new laws about data-processine should not unnecessarily restrict the flow, and that the question of international co-operation is of growing importance. Another international issue to be dealt with is national privacy laws.
