$9000 paid for Hereford bull
A record price for the season of $9OOO was paid recently for this two-year-old horned Hereford bull, bred by the Beachcroft stud, of Southbridge. His new owner is T. J. Harris, of Hangaroa, Gisborne. Named Beachcroft Dave, t bull is massive for his age, and has an excellent top line. For Mr and Mrs Allan, of Beachcroft, selling a bull to the New Zealand stronghold of the Hereford as quite an achievement. However, the bull carries strong bloodlines of Gisborne herds. He is by Taurau Valley Inca, a bull which was used as herd sire by the late John 1 hacker, of Okains Bay. for about 10 years. Mr Allan then used him for three seasons.
Mr All_n has 500 straws of semen, taken from him, in cold storage. Another of Inca’s sons won the championship at
the South Island Hereford sale at Timaru last month, subsequently being sold to Sullivan Bros., of Fox Glacier, for $l5OO.
His purchase from the late Mr Thacker has proved most gratifying, for his sons have been in good demand. Inca was disposed of last season on account of age — he was 15 — but
Mr Allan describes Beachcroft Dave as the replica of his sire. Until the offer from the northern buyer, he had intended to prepare him for the Royal Show at Christchurch in November.
Negotiations for the sale of the bull were handled by Dalgetys stud stock department in Christchurch.
