Banabans’ damages

Sir, —The facts available in New Zealand would lead us, surely, to hang our heads in shame to have to acknowledge that we, too, are British subjects. The damages awarded to the Banaban people for the restoration of their home island, Ocean Island, in the Gilbert and Ellice group (viz. $15,000 without costs, which are estimated to be about $500,000) by the High Court in England, would suggest a Pyrrhic victory of enormous magnitude. Considering the number of island people wronged, their cultural disadvantage compared with the great mining commissions which have ravaged their home for 30 years, the damages seem positively degrading to the British reputation for fair play. I note that an appeal is to be lodged.—Yours, etc., NATALIE B. CARLISLE. August 3, 1977.
