Former All Black back

A former All Black hooker who has been away from the first class rugby scene for four and a half years will be Marlborough’s pack leader in its Radio New Zealand first division competition match against Southland in Invercargill today. The 33-year-old Terry McCashin has been brought into the side to fill Alan Sutherland’s old place at No.

8 in the “Red Devils’” pack. Although most of his rugby has been at hooker, McCashin has played as a flanker, No. 8, and midfield back in the last two seasons. He has a startling turn of speed, reads a game well, and has always paid attention to his condition. McCashin’s last appearance in top rugby was for King Country, during a soli-

tary season in 1972. Originally from Levin, he played for Horowhenua in 1963-64, Wellington in 1965-66-67, Horowhenua again in 196869 and Wellington again in 1970. He was twice on tour in Australia with New Zealand sides: with the 1964 Colts and the 1968 All Blacks. He has not previously appeared for Marlborough, but has raised his team, Waitohi, from the lower ranks to the top in the competition.

For the seventh time in as many matches Marlborough will field a rearranged side. From the original team which was beaten, 12-3, by Canterbury only the left wing, Brian Ford, the centre, Steve Marfell, and the hooker, Kevin Sutherland, are retained. Kevin Sutherland will require a good game at hooker, as he is being closely challenged by John Findlay.

It is probable that Kerry Hodges and Jim Love will be available for the side’s next game on Saturday against Counties, and David Neal is also expected to return soon.

The side is: Ray Gordon; Ford, Marfell, Kevin Price; lan McAlpine, Brian Hunter; Peter Baker; McCashin, Brian Dwyer, Bruce Kenny, David Hammond, Mark Best; Mike Gordon, Sutherland and Grant Harrison. Reserves: Findlay, Ross Rendall, Alan de Joux and Mark McKee.
