Four left in Chatham Cup
Technical, Nelson, North Shore and Mount Wellington send their names into the soccer hat for tonight’s semi-final draw of the Lion Chatham Cup.
Yesterday’s quarter-final matches produced no surprises, with the three remaining Rothmans League sides all winning their games, and Technical beating Gisborne City away. Technical is now the only Canterbury team and the only regional league team left in the cup. It was also the onlv side to win its quarter-final by two goals, with the other regional league teams putting up a brave fight. The other Christchurch representative in the quar-ter-finals was Woolston W.M.C., also of the Broadlands Southern League, which it currently leads.
Woolston defended resolutely against a strong North Shore team, and held for 80 minutes before Shore’s Ted Edwards scored the game’s only goal.
Nelson United withstood a strong challenge from the star-studded Courier Rangers, from Auckland, to win, 3-2. Mount Wellington, which has been the cup favourite since Technical knocked out Trans Tours United (cup-holder for the last three years), beat Waterside, 2-1. Technical, which is also bidding strongly for the southern league, was the only side that needed extra time to win. After Gisborne led at half-time. Technical scored once in the second half and twice in extra-time.
Hamilton still leads the Rothmans League after two
matches were played at the week-end. It gained a valuable 2-2 draw away to one of its main rivals, Stop Out, yesterday after trailing by two goals. New Brighton slipped further into trouble by losing to Wellington Diamond United in Wellington on Saturday. It is cemented to the bottom three with 13 points from 17 games. Eastern Suburbs has two games in hand and a better goal average and Nelson has three points more, having played one game more. Blockhouse Bay, the only other likely candidate, seems relatively safe with 17 points from 18 games. Trans Tours United’s scheduled game on Saturday was postponed for the eithth time this season, a dreadful record and most unlucky. It was to play Eastern Suburbs in Auckland.
