Airport parking charges
Sir, — On Wednesday, July 13, at 6.15 p.m. I parked my car at the Airport. On Friday, July 15, at 1.00 p.m. I took my car out of the park. My car had been parked for 424 hours, or roughly one and three quarter days. The charge for airport parking is 20c an hour up to five hours, thereafter $1 a day and part of the day. As best I can recall, there are 24 hours in the day; I should therefore have been charged $2. I was charged $3, or TO per cent too much. This was not a mistake by the toll booth operator, as it was confirmed by his uniformed superior. As a ratepayer of Christchurch City, and therefore part-owner of the Airport, I am pleased that the Airport pays its way. I am far from pleased with the ethics demonstrated by the management. — Yours, W. H. BARKER. July 25, 1977. [Mr R. C. Buchanan, the airport director, replies as follows: “Mr Barker has mistakingly calculated his fee on a twenty-four hour basis. The charges which are prominently displayed at the car park entrance are 20 cents for the first hour, 10 cents for each succeeding hour up to $l.OO per day or part of a day. For charging purposes, a day commences or finishes at midnight. As Mr Barker parked for two part days and one full day the charge is correct at $3.00.”]
