Demand wanes for small loaf

Demand has been so low for the new 350 gram loaf of bread, introduced in May by three Christchurch bakeries, that one of the bakeries is considering withdrawing it. Sales had proved that it was not economic, said the manager of C. E. Boon, Ltd. ; “The ‘3so’ accounts for less) than 0.5 per cent of our total; I turnover—compared with its ibigger counterpart the full-) > sized Vienna, which makes lup 20 per cent of our sales. ! “Bakers have spent thouslands of dollars trying to help I the people who have asked I for this loaf but, as they predicted, now that it is available, no-one is buying it.” He said Boon’s was now considering stopping baking i the loaf.

T4r M. Home, manager of

Stacey and Hawker, Ltd, which bakes the “Dinky” loaf, said that although the public had not supported the loaf they had called for, his bakery did not plan to withdraw it. Sales of the loaf might pick up in summer, he said, [but at the moment, Stacey land Hawker was certainly not .making a profit from the ' small loaf.

Brooklyn Bakeries, Ltd, baker of the “Sunshine.3so,” did not yet intend to stop production of the loaf, although sales had decreased continually since it was introduced. said the firm’s manager (Mr R. Curragh). “The loaf has been uneconomic right from the start, but. we produced it because the public wanted it,” he said.
