Motorists ‘pay for trucking’
PA Wellington Private motorists will subsidise road transport still further because of the relaxation of the 64 kilometre trucking limit to 150km,' (according to the National! [Union of Railwaymen. The union’s secretary (Mri D. C. Goodfellow) said yesterday that compared with j trucking firm’s, private! motorists were already pay-! ing too high a proportion of j
[the petrol tax to maintain New Zealand roads. The relaxation of the trucking limit to 150 km — combined with the policy (adopted in the early 1960 s of .allowing private freight for- [ warders to work from railiway sidings — would be [“contrary to the Minister of [Finance’s hope for greater [efficiency in rail operation, land would only further run [down an already sadly [neglected rail system.’’ I Overseas countries, including the United States, were returning to rail transport because of the energy crisis — another reason to doubt the wisdom of the Government’s decision, said Mr Goodfellow. A spokesman for the office of the Minister of Transport said yesterday that Government fees on truckers “could be altered” to ensure that the railways stayed competitive. These fees included the new distance tax, and licensing fees and sales tax.
