N.Z. would resist airline

PA Wellington President Carter’s decision to designate Continental Airlines as the second United States carrier for New Zealand has not been welcomed by New Zealand Civil Aviation officials, and will be strongly resisted.

Officials in Wellington said yesterday that there were enough seats already available to cope with the 200,000 passengers a year from the west coast of North America to New Zealand. A third service from Continental, operating three times a week, would be considered too much of a disruption to existing services, they said.

The transport reporter of the Evening Post said that Continental would meet resistance from the New Zealand Government on two points: the threat to existing services, and the question of whether or not existing capacity could cope with demand.

He said that Air New Zealand had long been involved in a planned build-up to meet limited demand from the United States and, along with Pan Am, intended expanding services later this year
