’Copter rescues skier

A Christchurch woman was rescued by helicopter after she slid more than 70m down an icy slope at the Mount Hutt ski-field yesterday. Mrs Wendy Brown, 238 Geraldine Street, St Albans, was ski-ing in a remote part of the southwest basin when she fell.

According to a spokesman for the Mount Hutt Ski and Alpine Tourist Company, skiers had been warned by loudspeaker to stay out of the area. “Conditions on that particular face were icy and treacherous yesterday; it was a forbidden area,” said the spokesman*. Mrs Brown suffered only minor leg injuries and bruises. She did not fall as far as first reported.

She was attended by the ski patrol before being flown to Christchurch by an R.N.Z.A.F. Iroqipis helicopter from Wigram. The injured woman was treated at Christchurch Hospital and later discharged.
