Housewife had gall
NZPA-Reuter Northampton Mrs Rita Ward, aged 36, the British housewife who slipped into an empty hospital bed and refused to move until she had gallstones removed, was said to be in a satisfactory condition after a doctor performed the operation in his free time.
“This is strictly a one-off affair. If anyone else acts in the same manner then I will refuse to operate on them,” said Dr John Chapman, who did not charge a fee for the operation. Mrs Ward commandeered a spare bed at Northampton General Hospital on Saturday saying she would not budge until she had been operated on as a protest against the difficulty in get- j ting a hospital bed under the. country’s National Health ; Service.
She had been told shej would have to wait at least! a year for the operation. j
